XXY Richard Fairley, the author of Software Engineering Concepts, has been designing computer systems since 1960 when he received his BSc from Stanford University in Engineering Physics. He joined the Digital Computer Laboratory at Stanford as a researcher, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1964. In 1969 he became a member of the Faculty of Engineering at Cambridge University, a post he held for ten years. In 1979, after taking his DSc from Cambridge, he became one of the founders of Software Technology Limited (STL), a Cambridge firm specializing in high-level computer languages and automatic code generation. In 1985 he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of STL. In 1986 Fairley left STL to establish an independent consultancy practice on software tools and systems design methodologies. This led to his writing many articles on the management of software development projects for leading journals such as Computerworld UK and INFORMS Today. In 1993 he merged his consultancy practice with that of Drs. John Goodacre and Rita Zadmierczak to form the Software Process Group, which he chairs. This group has a number of clients in the computer industry and the public sector, including a number of UK government departments. In 1988 Fairley took a sabbatical from his consultancy activities to become Chairman of the Department of Computer Science at George Mason University in Washington DC, a position previously held by H. T. Kung, the Chairman of Digital Equipment Corporation. In 1987 he was appointed Chairman Emeritus by GMU when he resumed his consultancy work in Europe. He became a Visiting Professor at GMU in 1989 and an Honorary Professor in 1993. He retired from GMU in 1995. Fairley has been a Fellow of the ACM since 1980, and is currently a Distinguished Member of IEEE. He has received awards including the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Award for Outstanding Contributions to Software Engineering, the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Service Award, the Donald A. Norman Award for Best Paper of 1994 from CLEO (the annual meeting of Computer-Based Engineering) on "The Art and Practice of Software Failure Prediction", two best paper awards at INFORMS' Conference on Development Methodologies (CODEM), and the Alita Krasner Memorial Award for Young Engineers in 1989. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Fairley has written 13 books:Fairley has also published many papers on software engineering topics and reviewed several major books, including:This list is not comprehensive.http://www.auckland.ac.nz/isctc/research/researchprograms/ic3-projects/ic2802_solutions_for_lifecycle_managementosteopathyofsoftwareandoftware.pdf http://www.auckland.ac. cfa1e77820
