A Casa dos EspÃritos (English: House of the Spirits) is a 1993 drama film based on the Chilean Isabel Allende's novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Bille August, and stars Meryl Streep (Clara), Jeremy Irons (Juan), Antonio Banderas (Pablo), Vanessa Redgrave (Sebastiana de la Rosa) and Glenn Close (Grace). The film became popular because it has many of its scenes filmed in Havana, Cuba. It also received critical acclaim for Streep's portrayal of Clara, "the spritual center of the filmmaker’s brilliant interpretation". The film also received the Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The story is set in a little Chilean town in 1944. The film begins with a conversation between a group of men about their desire to visit a house where there are spirits. At first, they believe that it is a property for sale and do not think that much about it until they see that there is already an old but dilapidated house on the street. The men decide that they would like to buy it, and then go out to the house to see if they can buy it. However, the door is locked. Thinking that the house may be haunted, they try to open it but are unsuccessful. The next morning when one of the man comes over, he is told about a man who came asking for information about buying a house in town. The man tells him what happened the night before and that he was able to open the door, but when he went in there was nothing in there except dust. Before leaving, he asked for information on the old man who lived in this house. His name was Esteban Trueba and he lived with his wife, Rosa, and his disabled daughter, Clara. After learning this information, the man goes to the town's bank to try to retrieve Esteban's records. There he discovers that there is a definite connection between the house and Esteban Trueba. The bank officer tells him that Mr. Trueba was left penniless after his wife died suddenly; only two months later he died as well. His daughter was taken care of by a distant relative and never told about her parents' death or even that she had a brother named Pablo who suffered from polio since childhood. With this information, the man decides to go to the house and see if he can learn more about this Esteban Trueba. He goes there but the house is locked so he tries to open it from outside. When he does so, a small note is found on a window that reads: "Clara, please let me in." The man goes into the house and finds a piano in the living room along with a stack of records. One of these records is a record by Leo Fender called "3 Kings" that plays when it is turned on. On it, there is an image of three kings standing around Clara's wheelchair. cfa1e77820
